Hi, I’m Janto McMullin, the founder of vlogical.com. In this post, I want to give you a quick introduction to the company, the blog, and the sort of topics that I’m going to talk about here.
What is vlogical.com?
vlogical.com is a specialist design and communication agency. It focuses on helping experts such as academics, analysts and teachers get better results from their communication efforts. How? Logically, of course.
At the top, I work with you to define measurable goals that are going to improve how effective you are at communicating with your audience, the precise steps to take to achieve these goals, and the tools you can use to get feedback on your results. To support this, I offer a complete managed hosting package that takes care of setting up and maintaining your website. Finally, there’s this blog, which shares my tips and advice for anyone who wants to take a DIY approach.
At the moment, vlogical.com is just me, but I plan to grow it as a business, not just an alter-ego. Feel free to contact me if you’re interested in working here.
What’s with the name?
The V in vlogical stands for a couple of things. First, it’s a reference to my background as a visual designer. I was originally thinking about calling the company “vision, logically” or some variation of that, but fortunately I thought of something shorter and a lot more memorable. It also stands for vision, as in having a plan, goal or higher purpose.
I wanted to include logic in the name of the company because it’s a key difference to how I work, and the services I can provide. I’ve always been someone who’s torn between very system-focused, technical design work, and having really wide interests including writing, painting and tinkering with role-playing games. (Yes, I am that nerdy.)
I’ve seen so many people struggle to communicate effectively because they didn’t have any real strategy, they were just running from tactic to tactic without taking the time to measure and improve.
I wanted to have a name that would appeal to people who were maybe a bit geeky themselves, had an idea that they could improve the design of their website or how they were communicating with stakeholders, but wanted more data-driven information on how to get real impact and value-for-money.
What’s this blog about?
This blog focuses on data-driven communication strategies for experts, whether that’s academic researchers, business analysts, or coaches and trainers. That includes everything from working with data visualisation, how to use data to optimise your website or social media accounts, and how to use modern tools and automation to build efficient data collection processes.
I’ll also document my own experiments with new tools and give regular reports into how vlogical is growing, the strategies I’m using and how effective (or not) they are.
